Introduction
There are various skills that could be learned in this course. This course consisted of three topics all of which enhanced my skills. These topics are family; nation building and culture. For instance, the three important skills I learned in this course are reading writing and critical thinking. These skills will be beneficial to my future courses in various aspects. In this analysis essay, I will do a reflective self-assessment on the three topics I learned – family, nation building, and culture – and write a well-developed analysis on the three important skills I learned in the course: reading, writing and critical thinking.
Family
This topic entailed reading and writing about the experience of family from the perspective of gender as depicted in popular TV shows about family. In this topic, I learned two important skills which will be beneficial to my future courses in various aspects. The first skill I learned in this topic is the reading skill. The reading skills will play a vital role in may academic life owing to the fact that all the assignments will involve reading and answering questions. Therefore, since I am in a position to read, I can understand the content then answer the questions appropriately. For instance, I am capable of reading and understanding the requirements for this assignment. In addition, I also learned an important skill on writing an effective essay. With this regard, I learned about the key elements of an effective essay. I learned that an effective essay should have an introduction, body, and conclusion. The main elements of an effective essay are thesis, problem or question, evidence, analysis and reflection, and structure.
Nation building
This topic involved examining speeches, essays, opposing viewpoint articles as well as interviews regarding nation-building in Iraq. The most important skill that I learned in this topic is critical thinking. In this case, I was able to critical examine other people’s work concerning a certain topic. This involves reading arguments and counterarguments on the given topic. By so doing, I am able to make clear and reasoned judgment on any given topic or problem. Critical thinking is an important skill in my future academic work in that I will be required to critically examine literatures and make open-minded and rational judgment that is informed by evidence. Additionally, through critical thinking, I can conduct valid research by critically examining new ideas and consequently making valid opinions.
Culture
This topic involved watching a film assigned to our peer group and engaging in discussion on the film and its representation of the American dream. Just like in the previous topic, I also learned critical thinking skills in this topic. This is due to the fact that the topic involved watching the film and then critically analyzing it with the group members. I learned this skill through group discussions and writing an analysis essay using critical sources. The critical thinking skill was enhanced by group discussions and the film analysis essay using scholarly and critical sources.
Conclusion
The course was indeed beneficial to me and my future academic life. The course comprised of three topics, namely, family, nation building and culture. Generally, the three important skills I learned in this course are reading, critical thinking and writing. Reading is essential to my future academic life in that all the assignments will require reading and understanding the questions. On the other hand, writing an effective essay is vital in my future academic work. Thus, the topic enhanced my writing skills in that I was able to know all the necessary elements of an effective essay. Finally, critical thinking will help me in analyzing literature.
